Aluminium joinery became really popular in New Zealand in the early 1970s. At the time it was considered to be close to maintenance-free, although this wasn’t always the case.
We’ve also had a bit of innovation since the 1970’s. The functionality and performance of the aluminium joinery has also significantly improved since that time.
This makes it easier to retrofit double glazing into existing aluminium frames than timber or older steel joinery.
During the consultation process our team will run through the condition of your joinery and talk to you about a retrofit double-glazing solution tailored to your home.
They’ll make sure your options are clear every step of the way.
The retrofit double-glazing solutions that we work with are compatible with most aluminium joinery.
The aluminium retrofit process is simple and easier than you might think. It doesn’t tend to impact any internal or external aspects of your home which is why it is relatively quick.
Retrofitting aluminium joinery also tends to be cost effective and affordable and provides a performance that is as close as you can get to brand new joinery. That is better insulation, more regulated temperatures, a healthier home and better noise protection.
We begin by removing the single glazing out of your window. From here our team simply change the glazing bead that holds the single glazing in place. This is replaced with a new bead to accommodate the new double glazing, without changing the window frame.
The other main change is a new surround around the opening sash windows, with an upgrade of the hinges and stays for the heavier double glazing. Sliding doors may need adapters depending on the age of the system but are also easy to upgrade.
The other upgrade that occurs automatically with the retrofit process, is all fixed or opening windows and sliding doors, that are subject to someone being able to walk into them, are upgraded with safety glass.
The finished look is similar to new aluminium joinery as it will be flat to the glass on the outside vs your typical old existing angled aluminium profile.
